We often see the dolphins racing along the sides of moored boats, the marinas, wharves and the rocks. Particularly when they are surface fishing and the fish are jumping out of the water trying to escape from the dolphin (See Birds and Dolphins).
Dolphins often work together when fishing and some of the dolphins will circle a school of fish while the others race in to grab the fish.īirds will also often feed with the dolphins. The Port River Dolphins use many different techniques to catch their fish including surface fishing, bottom feeding, Kick fishing (using their tails to stun the fish) and fish throwing. Echolocation is when a dolphin releases a sequence of clicks or whistles and then analyses the returning echo to determine the size, shape, distance, direction, speed and even the density of an object. They do not drink water like we do but obtain water from the fish they catch.ĭolphins use echolocation to locate their food. Like all mammals dolphins need fresh water to survive. Dolphins do not usually chew their fish they swallow the fish whole, head first. Sometimes they are racing back and forth chasing after a fish, other times they are using the movement of the water to locate and flush out garfish and other small fish that may be hiding.Īn adult dolphin eats approximately 8-15Kg of fish per day. On top of this, they are not capable of making noise in the same way dolphins do. Lastly, there are a few physical differences between dolphins and sharks. Contrastingly, sharks are not very social and are typically alone. Dolphins are very social animals and travel, live, and hunt in pods.Īdditionally, they are quite vocal and use sound to communicate and navigate. However, interestingly, most sharks give birth to their young as well.Īlthough, this does not mean that they are mammals, seeing as they lack the other necessary characteristics to match this description.Īnother difference between these two animals is their behavioral traits. You may know that another defining characteristic of mammals is their ability to give birth to live young. On the other hand, dolphins are mammals, much like humans, meaning they breathe air, are warm-blooded, and nurse their offspring. Specifically, sharks are fish, meaning they have gills, breathe underwater and are cold-blooded. First and foremost, one of the biggest differences between these animals is that they are different kinds of animals.
